The Best Gift This Christmas: A Beehive and a Share of a Goat

No, you didn't read that wrong. We received the strangest catalog in the mail this year. It almost got lost in the slew of holiday catalogs that descended upon us in November. It did catch Lizzy's eye, however, because it had the picture of a sheep on the front cover. It was a catalog of livestock and other creatures that you can "gift." Lizzy wanted to know about the animals for sale, so I read it and was pleasantly surprised. Strange, yes, but it turns out that it is a great way to help families in need around the world. What I really like about this organization is that they actually help families become self-sufficient. The families receive a cow (or a flock of chickens, or whatever you choose) and training on how to maintain their new "asset." As a result, they gain a sustainable source of food and income for their family. Of course, this is geared more toward families living in 3rd world countries rather than inner-city USA.
Lizzy was so enamored with the idea of giving someone livestock for Christmas, that our kids decided to raise money to buy honey bees and a share of a goat for someone in need. Taylor and I helped them bake loads of carmel corn on Saturday and they sold bags on the street corner for a good cause. Gramma Karen even pitched in some of her famous cookies to sell. The girls sold every last morsel and reached their goal. Yay!

Giving Thanks

Although I missed being with the Seldens in DC this year (it sounded like a lot of fun... everyone descending on Mike and Mary in their new digs) we had a fabulous Thanksgiving with ALL of the Jackson clan. We're so glad Amberlyn & Rich were willing to make the drive from Utah to be here. (I have to say that driving 12 hours for Karen's Thanksgiving feast would absolutely be worth it.) We had fun entertaining the kids and they were in heaven having all of their Jackson cousins around. Another perk: Rich & Amberlyn brought their new little puppy, Molly. Our kids got to try dog-sitting for about 24 hours. McKenna took good care of Molly and gave her plenty of attention. Will we be getting a dog this year? Doubt it. But Molly could have easily swayed us.

The Last Piece of Thanksgiving

Yesterday, as I looked at the last piece of apple pie, I hesitated for a moment. What?!? Not because I had any guilt over pigging out for the past 3 days, or any doubt that I would polish off the last piece rather than leave it for another wanton soul. (I made it after all.) It was because I knew that once the last piece of Thanksgiving disappeared, Christmas was upon us. I LOVE Christmas, but it produces a certain level of stress and busyness. I'm hoping to avoid most of it by leaving town for a week and a half right smack in the middle of the Christmas madness. I'm just a little apprehensive about whether a mid-December vacation will alleviate Christmas stress, or simply intensify it given that our Christmas prep will be crammed into fewer days. I'll let you know. Maybe this will become a new Christmas tradition:)

Dad of the Year

That's right. Taylor has earned the Dad of the Year award in my book. He stayed home from church a few weeks ago with a sick Lizzy and this is what I came home to. I would never do that! And that is why I am not the Mother of the Year.

Stone Soup With a Side of Cuteness, Please

Lizzy's preschool does a cute performance of Stone Soup every year around Thanksgiving. After the performance, we all sit down to feast on Stone Soup, corn muffins, and pumpkin pie. The kids rehearse the story, bring in ingredients, and even help slice the veggies for the soup the week of the event. The only downer is that there is never enough room to seat everyone comfortably and the chairs are all kid-sized. Ah well, I won't have the privilege again until Charlotte is in preschool. (Is that really in just 1.5 years?)

Hooray for Spontaneous Visits!

Gramma Sue came to see us for a few days on a last-minute getaway. I love the unexpected visit.... with a couple of days warning, of course. (Don't everyone start showing up on my doorstep unannounced.) We had a great time just hanging out with Grandma. We couldn't resist taking her along for one last hurrah at Gilroy Gardens in 2009.

On With the Show...

Sydney was finally old enough to participate in "Showbiz" this year. Her group performed for an enthusiastic audience of 90-somethings at Diablo Lodge (a local rest home.) Sydney loved performing with her friends!

It's Official... I'm a Party Pooper

Every year Halloween seems to become even more overblown and this year was no different. The sugar highs, the costumes, the sugar highs, the parties, the trick-or-treating, the parties.... it all wears on me, but what really pushed me over the edge this year was a handful of mini Sweet Tarts: A handful of mini Sweet Tarts left in one of my kid's pants pocket that went through the laundry and festered and bled onto my shirts and stained at least 2 of them with deep purple and blue spots. And that is how Halloween went from one of my not-so-favorite holidays to the LEAST favorite holiday.

Seven Halloween parties in one week is not healthy for any family... nor is all the candy that accumulates. We had full trick or treat bags before Halloween even arrived! The only benefit to Halloween is that I have found Lizzy's kryptonite. She loves candy. I know, every kid loves candy, but Lizzy really really LOVES candy. She will do almost anything for candy... lie, steal, oh, and even OBEY HER MOTHER for candy. So now, whenever we are struggling with Lizzy we bring out her bag of candy and take out a handful in front of her and head for the trash. It kills her. The only problem is that we have had to take out so many handfuls that there are only about 2 left. Yikes.

My little zebra

Lizzy had a different costume for every Halloween event(hand-me-downs.) Here she is a zebra-loving bunny.

I know what you're thinking: What a lame mom I am for putting my 10-year-old in a cardboard box and calling it a costume. Really, in this instance I am being "good mommy" for letting McKenna come up with her own creative idea (the package-being-sent-to-Paris costume) and design it herself with her friends. Good mommy.

She even got to strut her stuff playing the flute in the band for the Halloween parade at school.

Here we have Beauty and the Banana watching the school parade together.

Charlotte as Blue Marker Face baby.

Trick-or-treating with friends... A ladybug this time.

Sydney and Lyndsay had such a great time they tied themselves together hoping they wouldn't have to go their separate ways. I'm not sure who lassoed who.

Lizzy is in heaven. What she doesn't know, is that she is hovering over my power to coax obedience out of her... Bahahahha

Picking Pumpkins

Since jack-o-lanterns rot in California if you carve them more than a week in advance (that darn warm weather!) we kicked off Halloween week with getting our pumpkins from the.... corner market. Not a farm, but they do have a few animals to feed just to make it a little more rural.
We decided to go straight to the source for our H1N1. What better way to get swine flu than from these cute little piglet snouts?
